The Ski Doo snowmobile sled is now a familiar sight at resorts across the world however they have only really seen an increase in their popularity in the last forty years. The first design of it was created in 1927 however it was not until the late fifties when it started to really appear in Europe.

The first patent for what is now recognized as the modern variety appeared in 1958 but it was not until the following year when it was first marketed. It then made its appearance in North America in 1962 when a patent was granted covering that part of the world with it then being seen at resorts soon after.

They are of course instantly recognizable with their seat, handlebars, and short skis on the base and this particular design has not really changed since its conception in the fifties. The only changes that have been made is an increase in general power and making them far more sturdy and capable of withstanding a lot more punishment than they ever could before.

There are several advantages to using this particular machine in these conditions and the main one is the ease with which it glides across the snow and blast through different drifts. This means you can get to somewhere else in a fraction of the time which is why they are used by people able to administer first aid to skiers hurt somewhere on the slopes.

As was just mentioned they are also quite sturdy and capable of working in all kinds of conditions which again lends them to the safety aspect. They are also very fast and can go up slopes meaning they are very adaptable to a range of terrain but they can be slightly adapted to help them work better in tougher conditions.

You are able to buy them with various size engines and they also come with different sizes of tracks with it sometimes coming down to either what you need it for or personal preference. You do also have different types you can buy even although they do all do pretty much the same thing but are just designed to deal with slightly different types of terrain.

The various types you may come across are known as cross country sleds, cross over sleds, or you may end up choosing mountain sleds for different terrain as there are several others out there that are designed more for speed or actual racing over set courses. The different kinds mean you are best to talk to experts before buying or look at what else is already in the resort and copy what they have.

So the Ski Doo snowmobile may have the same kind of basic design as it has had right from the beginning but there have been a few changes so it can cope with whatever a resort can throw at it. You can get them with various amounts of power and track sizes so do look at a range of them before you go ahead and buy one.
